What are Chakras?

First of all lets be clear about what we mean when we talk about chakras.

Chakra is the Sanskrit word meaning disk or wheel and simply refers to the energy centres in our bodies.

Many different traditions have their own version of chakras but what they have in common is that they are considered to be “energy centres”.

For our purposes we are going to concentrate on the Eastern tradition which uses the 7 main chakra system and works from your top downwards.

As with all of these things opinion varies but we are going to focus on the most commonly agreed colours and attributes but feel free to do your own research.

Why should we be concerned about our Chakras?

The short answer is that when one or more of our Chakras is out of alignment or just not working efficiently we start to feel unbalanced. We most often don’t know WHY? We feel this way, we just know we feel “out of sorts”.
Below is a very brief description of the 7 major Chakras and what they do.

Please scan through them and then we can move onto the clearing meditation.

1. Crown Chakra.

Colour associated with the crown chakra is purple/violet or white.

Located. Just above the centre of your head.

Our Crown Chakra represents our ability to be fully connected spiritually and our connection with the Divine.

2.Third Eye Chakra.

Colour associated with the third eye chakra is deep blue/Indigo.

Located. between your eyes on your forhead.

Our Third-eye chakra, influences our ability to see the big picture and connect with our psychic perception and intuition.

3. Throat Chakra.

Located. On your throat..

Colour associated with the Throat chakra is Light Blue/Turquoise.

Our Throat chakra is unsurprisingly to do with our communication centre.
This is as much about speaking our truth to ourselves as it is communicating our truth to others.

4. The Heart Chakra.

Located. At the centre of your chest slightly above where your heart is.

Colour associated with the Throat chakra is Green.

The heart chakra is considered to be a bridge between the lower chakras (which deal with earth based material energies) and the upper chakras which

( which deal with spirituality and the Divine).

5. Solar Plexus Chakra.

Colour associated with the Throat chakra is yellow/gold.

Located. Around your stomach area.

The Solar Plexus Chakra controls our ability to be confident and assertive in life (our feelings of self worth).

6. sacral chakra.

Located. Just below your navel.

Colour associated with the Sacral chakra is Orange/Deep Red.

The Sacral Chakra deals with how we relate with emotions both our own and others. The Sacral Chakra is the seat of our sexual energy and our general feeling of well being.

7. The Root Chakra.

Located. At the very base of the spine.

Colour associated with the Throat chakra is Red.

The Root Chakra is responsible for giving us the feeling of being grounded and deeply connected with the world.

It has to be said that these are by no means the only Chakras we have .

we also have energy centres in our hands and feet this is why we often feel so connected to someone when we hold hands.

However these are the most commonly referred to Chakra from the eastern tradition and so it is good to learn them off by heart.
